Call for Expressions of Interest

EMP are calling for Expressions of Interest to present at the Emerging Museum Professionals HUAKINA 2019, a one-day conference on Saturday May 25th 2019 to be held at Victoria University of Wellington, Kelburn Campus.

Following in theme of the main MA19 conference, the day will engage and explore Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its importance to the GLAM sector, and how EMPs can contribute to and impact museum practice. We hope the day will inspire further conversations throughout the EMP group, in our practices and our respective organisations. Further, it will be a safe space to kōrero about difficult topics.

We are calling for expressions of interest in the following areas:
  • Biculturalism Keynote - One or two speakers to draw on their own experiences and to interrogate biculturalism and its application in the sector
  • Biculturalism Workshop – Facilitators to run a session about biculturalism that requires participation and engagement from those attending. This workshop could be centered around provocations, practices or theories
  • Hard Topic / Hot Topic Panel – In the safe space of the huakina, a panel of people will analyse and speak to controversial and difficult questions, asked anonymously by the group
  • Mentoring Session – We are after mentors and mentees to speak to their experiences of mentoring in/out of the GLAM sector and how to engage in a two-way exchange of knowledge and ideas
If any of these topics interest you, please email emp@museumsaotearoa.org.nz by Monday 25 March.

If you have any questions or other ideas for the huakina, please also get in touch.

Inside Insights

EMP Huakina 2018

19 – 20 May 2018, Christchurch

It's an oldie but a goodie - you are only as beautiful on the outside as you are on the inside.

As emerging museum professionals, we believe we've travelled the same paths and are on the same journey. We contribute to our community’s artistic, scientific, intellectual, cultural and educational development and well-being. We know what’s up in our institutions.

What does it really mean to develop a career in a cultural institution? What does it take to engage with our local communities? How and why do we contribute? How do we ensure our awareness of what's up in our institutions means issues are actively addressed and strengths are developed?

Our paths, motivations, situations, participation and awareness may differ, but we chose this journey.

We are on the inside. Who we are, what we do and what we stand for matters.

Inside insights, our EMPNZ 2018 mini-conference in Christchurch offers an opportunity to consider, question and share who we are as Emerging Museum Professionals, what we do and why.
