Manager / Business Builder
The Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum has the potential to be a major visitor attraction and educational resource for the province of Canterbury. The Museum is part of the historic heritage precinct of Okains Bay and incorporates a range of purpose built, replica and relocated heritage buildings. With over 20,000 items on display, the Museum vividly conveys the stories of early tangata whenua and tangata tiriti life through its impressive collections which include an extensive, nationally significant collection of taonga Māori and items from the Banks Peninsula area associated with whaling, farming and colonial rural life. The Museum also cares for a magnificent collection of waka and small European boats. A blacksmith’s shop, print shop, vintage vehicles and other working exhibits are in action on open days, notably during the Museum’s famous Waitangi Day commemorations which are regularly attended by thousands of visitors.
Main Purpose of the Role
The Manager/Business Builder will lead the Museum's efforts to achieve financial sustainability, and unlock the full potential of the Museum and its collections by:
- Leading the development and implementation of plans and processes that contribute to the Museum’s financial sustainability
- Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders
- Assisting the Board to develop and implement the Museum’s Strategic Objectives and Annual Plan
- Managing people and projects

Financial Authority
As per delegated authority of the Okains Bay Māori and Colonial Museum Board
Key Areas of Responsibility
- Prepare and submit funding applications
- Develop and implement marketing strategies for the Museum
- Develop and manage partnerships with key stakeholders in collaboration with the Board
- Manage and work with staff effectively including setting tasks and objectives
- Deepen community participation and pride in the Museum in collaboration with the Board
- Build a constituency of support from patrons, benefactors and funding agencies
- Oversee collections care and approved collections projects
- Develop an active Friends group to strengthen community commitment
- Develop and implement health and safety plans and systems as required by law
- Co-ordinate the Museum’s educational programmes
- Co-ordinate projects and volunteers

To be successful in this role you will be able to demonstrate
- Experience preparing funding applications
- Management experience preferred (ideally in the Museum or Tourism sector)
- Cultural competency
- A desire to help build and maintain an enjoyable and highly productive work environment
- A high level of organisational skills
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays and/or weekends where required
- Excellent interpersonal and time management skills and a strong work ethic
- The ability to work independently and with a small team located within a small rural community
- A relevant tertiary qualification
Hours of Work
This is a permanent part-time (24 hours per week) role. The Manager/Business Builder role requires at least one day per week to be worked at the Museum during the Summer season and at least one day per fortnight to be worked at the Museum during the Winter season. However, much of the role will also involve work away from Okains Bay, meeting with stakeholders in Christchurch and elsewhere.

Remuneration
$66,560 pro rata.
