Director
The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi O Whakatū Trust is seeking applications for the position of Director, on the retirement of the current Director in October.
The position will suit someone with proven people management skills and a demonstrable ability to develop and motivate a small team. They will have a good understanding of New Zealand’s visual arts in an international context and be able to drive the overall creative vision for the Gallery. They will have an understanding of arts’ funding and a willingness to pursue funding from public and private sources to ensure that the Suter is appropriately funded. An understanding of tikanga is desirable.
The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi O Whakatū is one of New Zealand’s leading provincial art galleries. It is owned and managed by a Trust Board, and receives substantial funding form the Nelson City Council and The Tasman District Council. It is a Nelson Council CCO.
The Director reports to a Trust Board of 6, appointed by the Nelson City Council. They will have a staff of approx. 8 full time equivalents, with part time, casual, and contract staff employed. There is a team of volunteers.
The Job Description provides a clear understanding of the role and reflects the breadth of activity of the Suter. The position is multi-faceted reflecting the relatively small size of the organization. The Trust is seeking to appoint someone with skills in all or most aspects of the role. It is very much a position that entails working with people - staff, Board Trustees, artists, Council, stakeholders, sponsors, other galleries, and the public.
The salary package will be commensurate with the breadth of the position and the skills, experience and understanding the successful applicant brings to it.
