Background
The Tourism Data Partnership Fund (TDPF) is a $400,000 contestable fund available in 2024/25 only, to identified tourism industry bodies, including Museums Aotearoa.
We partnered with Dot Loves Data on the Tourist Tracer project which uses payment data to define the value of international tourists.
This project uses payment data (collected via payment terminals and ANZ cards) to map the journeys international and domestic tourists take around Aotearoa New Zealand. Initially partnering with museums and galleries, we will show which places are hot for tourists, their share of wallet with other attractions and where else they go and spend their money. We can also match that data with demographic meshblocks to give us accurate profiles of who is coming here.
This data will allow us to attract funding into the tourism sector and direct it towards greatest value, greatest need and greatest opportunities. The formula would target museums and galleries delivering value to international tourism, as well as the potential to develop tourism off-peak and in non-traditional areas. It will invest in growth potential and support Tourism New Zealand’s growth goals of growing off-peak tourism.4 If visitors are going to come here regardless of the season and weather, they need to have compelling attractions and activities, regardless of the season and weather.
