Advocacy

At Museums Aotearoa, one of our strategic goals is to serve as the trusted voice of our members. We advocate for the value our sector provides and the people with in it, ensuring its importance is recognised by central and local government, tourists and our communities.

MA has strong relationships with government agencies, allowing us to represent the sector’s interests on a wide range of critical issues. We are committed to advocating on behalf of our members, even when our stance differs from government views.

Regional Tourism New Zealand’s Tourism Data Partnership Fund

Privacy Amendment Bill

MA appeared at the Select Committee hearing on the Privacy Amendment Bill seeking a specific archiving and collecting exemption in line with other international jurisdictions. Read about our successful result here.

International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) Review 2024

MA supported raising the IVL from $35 to $100 per visitor, citing inadequate funding for sectors essential to maintaining tourism infrastructure and services. MA also wrote to Tourism Minister Doocey, with a proposal of investment for the additional revenue from the IVL increase. Read the submission and supporting documents here.

Fire and Emergency Levy Exemption

The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) consulted on whether the Fire and Emergency Levy exemption in relation to “art and items in cultural heritage body collections” should be included as an exemption in future Levy regulations and bill amendments. Result is a continued exemption as above and we are still working on creating a permanent legislative exemption. Click through for details.
